Chers citoyens et citoyennes de North Hatley,

Chers voisins, parfois éloignés, mais voisins,

J’ai le bonheur de vivre North Hatley à titre de résident permanent depuis les 5 dernières années, mais dans les faits, j’ai ce village tatoué sur mon coeur depuis 35 ans. Toutes les années où j’ai côtoyé North Hatley en tant que touriste, j’ai été séduit par la beauté de paysages à couper le souffle, par la richesse de son patrimoine architectural et par la fabuleuse histoire qui a façonné cet endroit mythique et hors du commun. Maintenant que je vis au rythme de notre village comme citoyen, ce sont des individus de coeur et de passions que j’apprends à découvrir et à apprécier et la plus grande richesse de North Hatley, elle est là!

Au cours des dernières années, j’ai eu le privilège de croiser la route de plusieurs d’entre vous. J’ai appris à mieux vous connaître et par le fait même, à mieux vous comprendre. En 2017, vous m’avez accordé votre confiance en me permettant de devenir Conseiller municipal. Sincèrement merci de m’avoir accordé le privilège de vous représenter pendant les 4 années de mon mandat.

Ce n’est pas sans éprouver un pincement au coeur que je vous annonce aujourd’hui mon intention de ne pas solliciter un nouveau mandat. Je suis un auteur et un créateur passionné et ce besoin viscéral de créer me martèle au quotidien qu’il a besoin de toute mon attention. Pour survivre, un créateur a besoin d’être attentif à ce besoin.

Ce que je retiens de mon passage en politique municipale se résume en un seul mot,  SERVIR. Ce mot tout simple est toutefois lourd de sens, car il « voyage » en groupe, une coalition dans laquelle on retrouve, entre-autre, l’imputabilité et l’humilité… dont celle d’admettre ses erreurs et ses imperfections, l’écoute de l’autre… même si le propos peut parfois être difficile à entendre, le courage… dont celui de prendre des décisions qui ne font pas toujours l’unanimité, ainsi que l’intégrité et la transparence… tant face à ceux et celles qu’un élu représente que face à ses propres valeurs. C’est ce qui m’a animé tout au long de mon mandat de conseiller municipal.

Si mon expérience me permet de poser aujourd’hui un regard très critique sur la politique municipale, je comprends aussi que seul le recul nous permet de faire le bilan de nos choix, d’évaluer l’impact de nos décisions. Si vous me questionnez à savoir si mon bilan d’élu des 4 dernières années est parfait, je vous répondrai sans aucune hésitation « non », mais j’ajouterai que chacune de mes actions, chacun de mes choix ont toujours été animés par la volonté sincère d’offrir le meilleur à notre village et à ceux et celles qui en sont l’âme.

Ce fut un honneur de servir North Hatley.

Dear citizens of North Hatley,

Dear neighbours, sometimes distant, but neighbours,

I have had the pleasure of living in North Hatley as a permanent resident for the past 5 years, but in fact, this village has been tattooed on my heart for 35 years. During all these years when I was a tourist in North Hatley, I had been seduced by the beauty of its breathtaking landscapes, by the richness of its architectural heritage and by the fabulous history that has shaped this mythical and extraordinary place. Now that I live at the rhythm of our village as a citizen, I am learning to discover and appreciate the people who have a heart and a passion for it. The greatest wealth of North Hatley is here!

Over the past few years, I have had the privilege of crossing paths with many of you. I have gotten to know you better and thereby, better understand you. In 2017, you gave me your confidence by allowing me to become a City Councillor. I sincerely thank you for giving me the privilege of representing you during my 4 year mandate.

It is not without a twinge of regret that I am announcing today my intention not to seek another term. I am a passionate author and creator and this visceral need to create keeps hammering me daily that it needs my full attention. To survive, a creator needs to be attentive to this need.

What I remember from my experience in municipal politics can be summed up in one word, SERVE. However, this simple word has a lot of meaning because it “travels” in a group, a coalition in which we find, among other things, accountability, humility… including the ability to admit mistakes and imperfections, listening to others… even if it is sometimes difficult to hear, courage… including the ability to make decisions that are not always unanimously accepted, as well as integrity and transparency… towards those whom an elected official represents as well as towards his or her own values. This is what has motivated me throughout my mandate as a municipal councillor.

If my experience allows me to take a very critical look at municipal politics today, I also understand that only hindsight allows us to assess our choices, to evaluate the impact of our decisions. If you ask me if my assessment as an elected official over the past 4 years is perfect, I would answer without any hesitation  “no”, but I would add that each of my actions, each of my choices have always been driven by a sincere desire to offer the best to our village and to those who are its soul.

It has been an honour to serve North Hatley.
