Bike Path/Piste Cyclable #2

As a former councillor, cyclist and a patroller for the City of Sherbrooke for 3 years, I agree that Capelton is busy for cyclists. However, in response to recent criticism by a decision made by the majority of our council, I would like to make everyone aware of facts to be considered in
making that decision and inform the citizens of information that was not included.

  1. It was mentioned that Capelton was a narrower road. In fact, Capelton between 29 ft 9 in and 29ft 6in and Rivière is 30 ft wide. So within inches of each other – plus there is no parking on Capelton
  2. Also the bridge is narrower -28 ft 3 inches
  3. Rivière now has parking on one side so it is narrower for traffic and a bit dangerous with car doors opening and tourists turning in driveways constantly looking for a parking spot.
  4. If the path was diverted to Rivière, the parking would have to be removed, which would not make the merchants happy.
  5. The path would have to pass through land in the Canton de Hatley privately owned so that would involve expropriation of a private citizen’s property.
  6. Then the path would have to go through the sewar plant with no fence – wonderful.
  7. In 1995 the decision was made by council to create a playground and parking lot for 140 cars. Part of the reasoning for the decision was to lessen the traffic in the center of town so
    that traffic would turn off Capelton into the new parking area. Now we are heading all the bike traffic into the center of town in both directions further congesting the bridge area.
  8. The destination for bikers will ultimately be to the tourist bureau for washrooms, parking or the dépanneur for a snack. All of the traffic will be over the bridge, imagine Mill St.
  9. Now the municipality has stated that they will charge for parking in the municipal parking lot next year. Ok we have seen what happened on Riviere, full all day. Well ok once you have to pay, where will you go for free parking – Laprise and Veterans as well.
  10. I would invite all to go to the end of Rivière and follow Veterans, Laprise and to the sewar plant and look at where this option would go.
    There is no easy solution to this problem and our council has to consider what is best for its citizens. Cyclists get out in good weather and unfortunately that is when the congestion occurs in town. When the parking lots are full, then it is park anywhere and we have no policing.
    Citizens are told to call the SQ. Our council and citizens need to fully weigh the positive and negatives for considering this issue, and for me they made the right call.

monde aux faits à considérer pour prendre cette décision et informer les citoyens des informations qui n’y étaient pas incluses.

  1. Il a été mentionné que Capelton était une route plus étroite. En fait, Capelton measure 29ft 9in – 29ft 6in et Rivière measure 30 pieds de large, une différence de 3 a 6 pouces – et il n’y a pas de stationnement sur Capelton.
  2. Le pont est également plus étroit – 28 pieds 3 pouces
  3. Rivière dispose désormais d’un parking d’un côté, ce qui le rend plus étroit pour la circulation et un peu dangereux avec les portes des voitures qui s’ouvrent et les touristes tournant dans les allées à la recherche constante d’une place de parking.
  4. Si le chemin était détourné vers Rivière, il faudrait supprimer le stationnement, ce qui ne ferait pas le bonheur des commerçants.
  5. Le chemin devrait traverser des terrains privés du canton de Hatley, ce qui impliquerait l’expropriation de la propriété d’un citoyen privé.
  6. Ensuite, le chemin devrait traverser l’usine d’épuration sans clôture – merveilleux.
  7. En 1995, le conseil a décidé de créer un terrain de jeu et un parking pour 140 voitures. Une partie du raisonnement à l’origine de cette décision était de réduire la circulation dans le
    centre-ville afin que la circulation quitte Capelton et se dirige vers la nouvelle aire de stationnement. Nous dirigeons désormais toute la circulation des vélos vers le centre-ville dans les deux sens, encombrant davantage la zone du pont.
  8. La destination des motards sera finalement l’office de tourisme pour les toilettes, le stationnement ou le dépanneur pour une collation. Toute la circulation se fera par le pont, imaginez Mill St.
  9. La municipalité a désormais déclaré qu’elle facturerait le stationnement dans le parking municipal l’année prochaine. Ok on a vu ce qui s’est passé sur Rivière, plein toute la journée. Eh bien, une fois que vous devrez payer, où irez-vous pour un parking gratuit – Laprise et Veterans également.
  10. J’invite tout le monde à aller au bout de Rivière et à suivre Veterans, Laprise et jusqu’à l’usine d’épuration et à voir où cette option nous mènerait. Il n’existe pas de solution facile à ce problème et notre conseil doit réfléchir à ce qui est le mieux pour ses citoyens. Les cyclistes sortent par beau temps et c’est malheureusement à ce moment-là que les embouteillages surviennent en ville. Lorsque les parkings sont pleins, on
    peut se garer n’importe où et nous n’avons pas de police. Les citoyens sont invités à appeler la SQ. Notre conseil et nos citoyens doivent peser pleinement les aspects positifs et négatifs de l’examen de cette question, et pour moi, ils ont fait le bon choix.

  1. The issue left out is what is the car & truck traffic on both sides

    of the river. This should be verified as it will be a car or truck that

    will cause an accident.

    Also to my knowledge there is a 4 way stop at the eastern end of the bridge.

  2. I would like make a comment concerning the bike problem. The alternate route makes a great deal of sense for safety reasons but the whole plan of the new route is predicated on the expropriation of private property which the proponents don’t mention. I am very enthusiastic and long time biker which is for me and most people a recreational and chosen activity. I have a choice of safe and secure bike paths. I would never knowingly choose or advocate for a path or part of a path that the owners were forced against their democratic right, to relinquish their property to a group of people who are asking for something and giving nothing. Presumptuous.I think so. However there are all kinds of possibilities which the owners would be willing to negotiate and to act in the best interest of everyone.It is a moral and ethical dilemma , not just safety.So think about it and possibly not about in your own best interest.
