MERRETT, Brian Jackson

Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, July 28th 1945, after a courageous struggle with ALS, died peacefully at home September 21st 2023 in North Hatley, Quebec, surrounded by his family.

Son of Hazel and Campbell Merrett, mourned deeply by his beloved wife and partner Lucinda Lyman, daughter Hannah Harper-Merrett, son Toby Harper-Merrett (Ciara Raudsepp-Hearne), step-sons Jonathan St. George (Nicole) and Lyman Carter (Whitney), brother Tim Merrett (Mary Ann Mongeau), niece Andrea Merrett (Ken Murata), and nephew Patrick Merrett (Hannah Shenker). He was much-loved Papi to his grandchildren Jackson Carter, and Ida and Lumi Harper.

Photographer and community-builder, Brian spent over fifty years in service to architectural heritage, publishing several books on the styles, landmarks and buildings of Montreal and Quebec, and leading in their conservation; his work is included in many private, corporate and public collections. With Lucinda he traveled regularly in Europe; his photographs of sacred spaces there bely a lifelong awe at the beauty of creation.

An outdoorsman, artist, and musician, memories of Brian will reverberate across Lake Massawippi where he lived his latter decades and gently pushed toward a better world.

Donations in memory of Brian would be welcomed by the ALS Society at https://als.ca/
